Memory of place

The community centre should be somewhere that people in the community want to
go to and feel comfortable in, but also be very proud of.

Something that can contribute to a sense of relating to or having an affinity with a place is the unconscious recollection of favourite childhood places, so I was keen to explore this before starting my design. However, ideally these memories would be from people who grew up in the general site
area.

So, I have asked a few people I know who may be able to help to answer and pass on the questions below. The answers may help to inform the more phenomenological aspects of my design...

Childhood experiences of “place”

1.      Think about some favourite childhood places that you went to on a regular basis

For example, your backyard, a park or playground, a beach or river, a room/place in a house or other building, a street, a tree house, homemade fort, etc.

 

2.      Describe each place as you remember it:

a.       Where/what was the place? 

b.      What did you usually do there?

c.       What did you mostly feel when you were there?

d.      Specific smells, or sounds?

e.      Did you usually share this place with other people? (who?)

3.      If it was a building, what do you remember about what it was made out of, or furnished with?
