Mutability

Mutability - repurposing, flexibility, reusing a building for some other purpose late in its life etc
Mutability - a transience of form and materials:

  • For Maori, there was a constant process of seasonal building and rebuilding, a process which also provided the ongoing opportunity to practice and pass on construction skills to the next generation.
  • This constant renovation and rebuilding had the effect of galvanising support from local communities and cementing relationships as they worked together on building projects.
  • The Samoan fale is designed to allow a cyclone to strip its thatch, then it is repaired
  • Flexibility and responsiveness to weather
